The Chicest Staircase in NYC

One of the most fabulous features of the Kips Bay Showhouse was the spiral staircase winding up the 5-story mansion which Toronto designer Philip Mitchell transformed into what might be the most stunning and epic gallery of art I’ve ever seen. The walls were covered in a beautiful, soft gray “Torridon” toile wallcovering from Mulberry that served as the perfect backdrop for hundreds of pieces of art, many from Philip’s own collection and others, donated works from galleries and artists that includes paintings, etchings, photography and more. I was thrilled to learn that my friend Mark D. Sikes was designing a room for the 2015 Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse. Mark is known for his love of blue and white and has even coined a frequently used hashtag #blueandwhiteforever that’s become it’s own thing. A Kips Bay Designer Showhouse Favorite: Alessandra Branca’s “Le Salon Rouge” Living Room

At this year’s Kips Bay show house one room I absolutely loved was Alessandra Branca’s salon style living room. Alessandra dubbed her space, “Le Salon Rouge” which is quite appropriate seeing as though red is a signature color that permeates some of her best known designs. Her room for Kips Bay was, of course, was full of red accents set against a backdrop of red cotton voile ticking stripe upholstered on the walls. The Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse is by far one of the most inspiring show houses of the year and what always impresses me most is the creativity with which the designer’s tackle the toughest challenges when it comes to decorating their space. While some participating designers are lucky to be assigned an amazing room in pristine condition with a perfect layout, other designers end up with far less desirable rooms to decorate.
