Vintage Chair Before & After

Before I even started redecorating my apartment, I scored an amazing pair of vintage, Louis XVI style chairs from an auction house in my hometown of Detroit. They were a steal for the pair and had great bones but were in dire need of a revamp. Here is what they ooked like before:

The silhouette of these chairs were exactly what I was looking for with feminine curves and a frame that wasn’t too ornate.  But the fabric screamed grandma’s house and the painted frame was all yellow and speckly. They were begging for a makeover! I had them reupholstered …

DIY Gold Bookcase Etagere - from sohautestyle.com

When I was redecorating my apartment I had a very hard deadline to finish things up since my place was being photographed for Better Homes & Gardens. One of the final pieces I was on the hunt for was a pair of chic gilded iron etageres. Rather than a brass finish, I preferred the look of gilded iron because I love the contrast, texture and patina of a lightly applied, shimmering gold finish with hints of black, aged iron peeking through. It’s been a while since I’ve shared one of my home decorating projects so I thought I’d give you a before and after look at my dining room chair makeover.  I’ve been holding on to these photos for ages! I picked up these Duncan Phyfe style mahogany harp back chairs on from a friendly Craigslist seller in New Jersey about a year and a half ago. I paid $80 for all 4 chairs…an awesome deal! They were nicked, dinged, and the upholstery…let’s not even talk about it. Beyond awful. These definitely needed some TLC.

I knew I wanted to paint …

Since the full house tour of my apartment was recently revealed on Apartment Therapy I thought you might like to see some before and afters of my space. I’ll start with the bedroom and show you how I transformed it from a boxy, soul-less space into an inviting and elegant retreat.

This is what the bedroom looked like when I moved in three years ago. It had zero character and was also quite small at approximately 11 1/2′ x 12′ with just one modestly sized closet. Aside from creating an elegant sleeping room, I also needed to design a layout …

I’ve always loved the look of X benches so when I spotted a vintage pair at the Brimfield Antique Show a couple of years ago, I quickly snapped them up without thinking twice! Here is what they looked like when I got them: The ugly pinkish-orange upholstery was dingy and dirty and the coiling inside was broken so when you sat on them you sunk down into the seat. Needless to say these needed an overhaul! I decided to re-cover them in a neutral yet textured fabric that was durable and I chose this cotton blend fabric called “burnish” from…

Before the holiday I was too busy running around to post pictures of my decorations but I wanted to share so here you go…a little peek at my holiday decor! The scheme consisted of greens, whites, splashes of bright pink for a punch of color and lots of sparkle and shine achieved with silver accessories, candles and lights. The result was unfussy yet very chic and sophisticated.

Here’s my dining area. On the right is a faux topiary in a silver pot with tiny silver ornaments purchased at HomeGoods for a steal. I added a mini string of …
